States inequality: x ≠ y. Ubiquitous in math, spec documents, and slide copy (“busy ≠ productive”). Space it like an equals sign, one space each side. Most programming languages spell it != or /=, but the true glyph is standard APL and Julia source. Renders universally; there is no emoji variant to guard against.
