An outlined square, the empty partner to ■. It is a common stand-in for an unchecked checkbox in plain-text documents and works as an empty legend swatch or placeholder cell. In some fonts it is also the fallback glyph shown for missing characters (tofu), so avoid it in contexts where readers might mistake it for a rendering failure.
