The second marker in the traditional footnote sequence * † ‡ §, used when a page already carries an asterisked note. Also placed before a name or year to indicate a death date (†1642) in genealogy and reference works. In footnote use it follows the referenced word with no intervening space.
Biography
ancient editingFrom the obelus family — the ancient editors' mark for text they judged spurious, a line to flag a passage as doubtful or best cut. It later became the standard second footnote mark, following the asterisk, and it also carries the quiet meaning it still has today: placed before a name or year, it marks that a person has died.
